Google Watch could launch by end of summer

Financial Times reports that Google’s Android team is working on a smartwatch. The report says the device would act as a companion to your smartphone, but there are not many details provided outside of that. Apple and Samsung are both working on smartwatches to be released later this year, so it shouldn’t be much of a surprise to hear that Google is doing the same.

Last week buried in our Motorola X Phone report was the revelation that Google Watch was well into development. That tip came from a trusted source and it’s looking like the information was accurate, so we wanted to add some additional details. Our source says that Google Watch could launch by the “end of summer” and it would feature tight integration with the rumored X Phone.

A Google patent application from 2011 described a smartwatch with a dual-screened “flip-up display”, “tactile user interface,” and onboard camera. All or none of those features could be included in the final design.

Other than that, we will have to wait and see what Google has in store. If their smartwatch is going to launch this summer, then it could debut at the upcoming Google IO conference in May. We are huge fans of smartwatches, so it will be interesting to see how Google improves the concept.

What features would you like to see on your smartwatch? Voice input? Heart rate monitor? Color display? Let us know in the comments below.
