One of the more interesting things to come out of CES this morning is NVIDIA’s Project Shield. While it sounds like some sort of defensive project from Darpa, it’s actually NVIDIA’s attempt to put its stamp on mobile gaming and yes that’s Skyrim running on the screen in the picture.
Project Shield a hybrid of sorts between, like a big ol’ ugly baby born from a one night stand between a gaming controller and a tablet. Basically you’re getting a 5†tablet with a controller stuck onto it which is something we can already do depending on your device. So what makes Project Shield stand out? Well, it streams selected Steam titles through a WiFi connection which allows you to stream PC games on Project Shield similar to how OnLive works. The Shield will play both Android & PC games via Steam, and you’re also going to get a “pure†Android experience courtesy of the play store. Project Shield comes with Jellybean, rocks a Tegra 4, and has a 5-inch 1280×720 HD display.
While Project Shield is certainly interesting I believe it’s only going to appeal to a niche market of gamers, especially considering we haven’t seen what Sony & Microsoft are going to do with the new Ps4 and Xbox yet. Either way it’s going to be a very interesting year for gamers and the industry as a whole, and we’ll be right here to keep you informed going forward in 2013.
